Proposal for redevelopment of an international bus terminal located close to Zürich Central Station. The design anticipates the city’s plans for a new through-traffic tunnel under the river bank. Using the existing program as a starting point, the design repositions the terminal as a part of the city’s public domain, situated along the waterfront.
The design consists of a large concrete structure positioned over a submerged two-storey parking, placed in an excavation in the ground. Public activity is concentrated around it, optimizing the use of public space and organizing the different flows of traffic. On top, the structure hosts a camping ground. The design reinterprets the site’s once turbulent history and emphasizes its continuous mode of exception. It harbors an ever-changing enclave of strangers, casually residing above an optimized infrastructural hub that places arrival and departure by bus at the heart of the city’s public domain.
