Borgheim ungdomsskole has been expanded with special classrooms for children who demand extra attention. Topic made a design in which the former library is transformed to a space with multiple classrooms.
The former library includes 2 original wall paintings made by Else Hagen. She was the first female painter in Norway to get such a big commision. We placed a freestanding volume in the room allowing the wall paintings to exist on their own. The freestanding volume accommodates different activities inside and around it. It is cladded with slats that are alternately placed with the short side and the long side to the wall. This creates a three dimensional diamond pattern that changes in view when you walk around it.
The classrooms are designed to allow as much light as possible, while at the same time they provide privacy for the children who have difficulties concentrating.
